
Although he did spend time in Pennsylvania, James Thorpe never even visited the Mauch Chunk area and was actually from Oklahoma. Recently, there was some drama related to this story. It is one of the great treasures of the Poconos and is situated in Lehigh Gorge in Carbon County, and it offers both the allure of a European village as well as the excitement of a mountain sports resort. In 1954 Mauch Chunk and East Mauch Chunk merged and formed Jim Thorpe. Pennsylvania also houses one of the most iconic cities in the US, Jim Thorpe. The state is the hub of marvelous activities, including the biggest free music festival in the country, hammering rocks to make them ring, and sprinting up the Philadelphia Museum of Art's Rocky steps. Even better, many of Pennsylvania's top tourist attractions are free to visit.
